SAINT MAURÍCIUS MONASTERY

Monks have been living in Bakonybél since 1018. Our first King Saint Stephen founded the monastery on the recommendation of the Benedictine monk, St. Günter, among the picturesque area of Bakony mountain. Here, St. Gellert lived as a hermit before taking on the episcopal service. The monastery has suffered wars during its thousand-year history, political strife and yet always rebuilt.

Next to the church and monastery belonging to the Benedictine order, the historic garden created in the 19th century has been under monument and nature conservation protection for decades. Part of the 5-hectare cluster garden is an English garden made up of ancient trees, while the other part is an organic herb garden and orchard, where herbs and fruit are grown and processed using only organic methods.

The herbs produced are used to make tea, jams, artisan chocolates, unique liqueurs and beers, which can be purchased in the Monostori gift shop.
